>conditions for the disabled in England? Treatment,
>accessibility, medical advances, etc.? *adh*

Things are pretty bad at the moment, and show no sign of
getting better. The present government seems determined
to throw the onus of support onto 'the community' which means
either local authorities (who are denied the means to do it)
or commerce and industry (who are going through bad times
themselves and laying people off).

Maybe for more details we can ask other readers of this
echo to comment.....

Sounds like some of Regan's trickle down/supply side
economics rubbed off on Mrs. Thatcher. Kick the responsibility
down to the locals and only let a trickle of funds supply the
need.

RW> LONG AS I STAY 6 IN. FROM THE SCREEN I CAN READ THE OUTPUT..I WANT TO
RW> GET A VOICE READER BUT I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS OUT THERE OR WHICH ONES
RW> WORK BEST, MONEY IS A CONCERN AS I HAVE A VERY LIMITED INCOME. I REALY
RW> NEED SOMETHING CHEAP..BUT SOONER OR LATER I MUST BITE THE BULLET AND
RW> SPRING FOR SOMETHING GOOD. I WAS HOPING THAT THERE IS SOMETHING GOOD
RW> AND CHEAP ! DO THE SOUND BLASTER TYPE BOARDS WORK ? IF SO WHAT SOFTWARE

In theory, the Soundblaster (or for that matter the much cheaper Covox Speech
Thing) could be used. However, the software driver for them would be huge and
you wouldn't have much memory left over.

As far as hardware, I'd suggest the Doubletalk PC from RC systems. It has a
very intelligible voice; human sounding yet fast and responsive (in
previous-generation synthesizers, these two qualities were inversely
related). It's a half-size card with all its processing onboard; your
computer doesn't have to spend any time doing text translation. It's also
highly affordable: $279.

As far as software, I'm going to go into shameless self-promotion mode and
suggest that you try Tinytalk Personal from my company, OMS Development. It's
a full-featured screen reader program that takes up only 17K. A beta-test
version can be found on many of the boards carrying this conference; version
1.00 will shortly be available as shareware with a $75 registration fee, which
shouldn't break anybody's budget.

hello.
i'm new to this (and all!) bulletin bds. I am quadraplegic & unable to
spespeak,as the result of a stroke in '81 when I was 23. I access the
compcomputer via specially-made switches which input morse code. The code is
translated on the screen as letters.
I would be very interested in meeting other disabled users.

Hello. I am a knowledge engineer and rehabilitation specialist, and will
be visiting this conference from time to time. I would welcome all
questions and gripes particularly as related to computers and the
disabled. What I cannot answer I will refer to our State's technology
resources center. I hope I can be helpful, and I know I will learn much
from each of you. <Waddell>

Hi Ann,
You know me maybe as Sunshine on Portal. I have now got local Fidonet
access, so sending mail will no longer be a hassle. Ann, Can you explain to
my husband, the process you go through to use a bbs? he just doesn't
understand how a blind person can read messages and write replies back...

I have cerebral palsy myself, and am hard of hearing. Always looking for
text-to-speech programs that will work on a 386sx or notebook for traveling.
Thanks
Tamar

Howdy everybody!
Just started this BBS stuff ,so............!
I had a brain-stem stroke 10 years ago {hen I was 23, resulting in
quadraplegia and inability to speak.
I access the computer using hand-held,mechanical switches which input
morse code. I tap out morse code signals with the switches which are
translated to English letters on the screen.
I just wanted to say hi and wish everyone a Happy Summer!
