[comp.sys.ncr] Retaining history with cshell

brian@t2ns1.gcs.co.nz (01/04/90)

Hi there,

I've been trying to remember the little trick an NCR instructor
showed me during a "UNIX Operating System course" where your "history"
is retained using .history and .logout and .login (I think) whenever
you log back in to restore the history used in your last session.

Local netters moaned at me to RTFM. I did, and it's nowhere to be
found! Some also offered solutions but being the wally I am I
didn't say what machine I had, rendering their answers useless.
Apparently this is done in a unique way on NCRs.

I'm using a 32/600 ver 2.01.01 sysV.

Any one know how it's done??

Ta.

This is not available on later ports of the csh to the Tower. There
is a savehist environment variable that can be set to the numerical
value of the number of history entries to be saved in ~/.history.

This feature was quite brain-damaged in (our) earlier csh's. It is
not even included now.
