[comp.sys.ncr] Poll file entries

nolan@tssi (02/23/90)

I am using the Poll file to contact my USENET feed site twice a day.

If the connection is made on the first try (a somewhat rare occurence),
it tries again 1/2 hour later.

I am using a poll at 11 and 23, and the default uusched times of
12 and 42 minutes after the hour.

Is there any way to avoid the second attempt?

Which second attempt? The one at 23xx assuming success at 11xx, or the
one 30 mins after the first attempt? In either case the solution lies
in knowing what's going on and with what controls are available on uucp.

The poll demon does nothing but create an empty work file to "fool"
uucico into actually trying to connect. That work file (C.xxxx0000) will
remain until connection is made. Uusched won't kick off a uucico unless
there is a work file present.

Connections can be limited to very narrow time frames by using the
Time-to-call field of the Systems file. The syntax is tricky and can
be difficult to get right, so test it.

For more information on uucp I recommend the manuals (not NCR's), the
Nutshell Handbooks:

Managing UUCP and USENET	(ISBN 0-937175-09-9)

and

Using UUCP and USENET (ISBN 0-937175-10-2)
