I have a Tower 32/400 with an MSC and a 140Mb Maxtor disk. I also happen to have another 140Mb Maxtor disk just gathering dust. Wouldn't it be possible in some way to use that one in the 400? Yes, I know this is not supported, but I am pretty certain it will still work just fine. The MSC and the OS software should certainly have no problems. What might be more difficult is finding a way to connect it to the 400 power supply. I don't mind if the disk itself just hangs out in the open beside the 400 cabinet. Any ideas, can this be done, and how? -- Robert Andersson, International Systems A/S, Oslo, Norway. Internet: ra@is.uu.no UUCP: ...!{uunet,mcsun,ifi}!is.uu.no!ra

The 400's power supply may not be able to handle the extra drain, especially at startup or when tape is in use. Cables are another problem if you can get or don't have them. Make sure that the second disk is properly strapped for unit number 1. The first one should be #0. The termination resistors should be installed only in the drive at the end of the data cable. -- -Mike Wescott mike.wescott@ncrcae.Columbia.NCR.COM

Splice a y-joint into an existing disk/tape power connector. The power supply on the 400 is more than sufficient. -- "Norf gribble mitz der bork bork bork?" (In this case an ATASI 47, but the idea is the same.) Here's what to do: a) remove the installed Maxtor 140, and remove it's termination resistor. refer to the Hardware Manual for the exact location. b) Put the original disk back in, and lead the control cable's second connector outside the cabinet. It will be used for the second disk. c) Make sure the second disk is 1. terminated and 2. addressed as disk number 2. Look in the Hardware Manual for the drive address shunts. d) Plug in the second disk to control cable. Run a second data cable from the MSC to the second disk. e) boot from h501 and carry on with dkpart -d h502; format -d h502 etc. f) The devices for /dev/[r]dsk/1s1 will be 2,5 and 7,5. The only problem you may encounter could be overloading the 400's power supply. I have an old Tower XP next to the 400; I use it as an auxiliary power supply and disk cabinet. The NCR technician had a heart attack when he looked at this arrangement, but I've been running it for 2 years. Mark Proudman (514) 636 1732 (voice) uunet!sobeco!qnorth!mark
