[comp.sys.ncr] NCR Towerview and X

stephen@mtiame.oz (Stephen Boucher) (05/30/90)

Can anyone tell me whether the NCR Towerview terminals still use a proprietary
daemon for font loading, or have they seen the light and started using TFTP

I sort of need to know so that I can make allowances for using them in a non
WIN/TCP network.

Many Thanks,
Stephen

The newer TOWERVIEWs do not require the TVserver daemon on the font host.
They use either NFS or TFTP for file access and for network booting.

The newer units, model 3412, also support the ability to download X Window
Clients. At the recent Xhibition show in San Jose, NCR demonstrated both
twm and mwm as downloaded clients running on the TOWERVIEW. Twm (Tab
Window Manager a.k.a. Tom's Window Manager) and mwm (Motif Window Manager)
normally run on a host machine in the network. Running these Clients on
the TOWERVIEW significantly reduces network traffic and improves the
response of window manager activities. NCR has not yet announced the
availability dates for these downloaded window managers. NCR also
demonstrated Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) support on the
TOWERVIEW as well as the announcements of new color and gray scale
     models for the TOWERVIEW family.

The modular towerview uses tftp to download the fonts. The newer
motherboard ROMs also have a button on the setup window for NFS. Now,
as soon as they release NFS for 32/700s running 1.0 (or greater), I'll
be a happy camper, and can stop using bletcherous tftp.
