Nope, that's not a misprint. We just received a new tower 32/700 with UNIX SYS V 1.03 and the now standard 150MB tape drive. I ordered Informix which has since come in on a 15MB tape. Supposedly the tape is to be installed with CPIO commands, but even using dd with the byte swap option could not make any sense of this strange media. Anyone out there have any idea if this tape can be read at all with our existing hardware and drivers? (Informix seems reluctant to send me a 60 or 150MB tape with the product - after all we only spent over $5000 on the product and $20 for the correct tape density would probably push the price up :-) :-) ) Any help (positive or negative) would be appreciated. BTW, are there some machines that now about the 3M DC615A cart's - I'd never seen this item listed on any vendor's 3M tape list before. Lou Anschuetz aka temngt23@ysu.edu or temngt23@ysub.bitnet

I am having problems mailing this to your address, so I will post it to news: Lou, > > Nope, that's not a misprint. In reality, they were in 'tar' format. Could that be your case? jp -- J.Pena / SSD Tel: 351-1-539911 NCR Portugal Fax: 351-1-525760 P-1011 Lisbon Codex Email: [uunet!ncrlnk!]ncrprt!john John.Pena@Lisbon.NCR.COM -- J.Pena / SSD Tel: 351-1-539911 NCR Portugal / Lisbon Email: [uunet!ncrlnk!]ncrprt!john John.Pena@Lisbon.NCR.COM

I believe that the 615A is a tape designed for software distribution where the whole capacity of a 6150A is not needed. As far as I know, it is identical to the 6150A except that it contains only 1/10th as much tape. The symptoms you describe sound more like a cpio vs tar problem than one with the tape itself. -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Dick Gill Gill & Piette, Inc. Thanks to all those who have replied regarding this problem. Indeed, despite the companies reports, the tape is a tar tape and is quite readable with tar. So, unfortunately at my phone expense, the documentation from the company should now read correctly for the next person. Another sad tale...... ;-)
