[comp.sys.ncr] NCR Tower Setup Help needed

dgr0093@isc.rit.edu (Michelangelo H. Jones) (02/25/91)

Greetings Tower experts..

A few months ago, I received an NCR Tower machine from work, where they
were throwing it out after it had been taking up space for a few years.
It came with four tapes: two labeled "installation" and two labeled
"diagnostics". It also came with one manual.

After messing with a terminal for some time, I managed to get a login:
prompt and eventually figured out the root password. Looking around the
system, I found that it had been installed very bare for a run-time
application of some sort. No cc, no ld, no man pages. OK, I said, I'll
reinstall the operating system.

I found a switch on the top of the machine that controls whether the
system comes up in console/maintenance mode or boots Unix. Flipping the
switch, I came to a menu which would allow me to load a tape. (Sorry I'm
being so vague, but I haven't got the machine here and it was about two
months ago that I really played with it.)

Unfortunately, the tape loading doesn't get very far before aborting
with a cryptic error message. Thus, I can't reinstall the operating
system without knowing what I'm doing wrong.

The system tapes are dated 1985 and there's no indication, poking around
the filesystem, that anyone has done anything with this since about
1986. So, the NCR tower which is the subject of this newsgroup may not
be the same machine that I have here; perhaps mine is the ancestor.

In any event, detailed instructions on exactly how to load the operating
system would be the most welcome information in the world. If specific
questions need to be answered, I'll do my best to provide them.

Thanks profoundly for any assistance.
