[bionet.molbio.genome-program] A question that comes up from time-to-time ...

kristoff@GENBANK.BIO.NET (Dave Kristofferson) (09/26/90)

I posted a reply to bionet.human-genome-project using the Usenet rn
utility and got the following back. Is this sort of thing normal for
Bionet news groups? I fairly routinely post to other newsgroups without
any of these undelivered mail messages coming back.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Other USENET newsgroups are not set up with parallel mailing lists in
various parts of the world, and this is what occasionally causes
receipt of bounced mail by people posting to the newsgroup. 99% of
the time it means that only one individual out of hundreds did not get
your posting. I report such problems to other BIOSCI nodes as they
occur, so feel free to send these to biosci@genbank.bio.net (although
in most cases, as in this one, I have usually already encountered and
reported the problem myself).

It is our plan longer term to have all sites participating in BIOSCI
move to USENET software but this will take some time to occur given
that this is not the most pressing item at the top of most biologists'
agenda. We have set up mechanisms at GenBank to trap bounced mail but
we can not do the same for the other BIOSCI nodes.
