MEDICAL RESEARCH COUNCIL UK HUMAN GENOME MAPPING PROJECT ONE DAY COMPUTING COURSES AUTUMN 1990 HGMP Note 5 ------------------------------------------------------------------ The online computing service of the HGMP Resource Centre at Northwick Park is now operational. The service offers a wide variety of software and databases in the fields of genetics and molecular biology. It is hoped that the service will include access to the Genome Data Base (GDB). Negotiations for a licence to run GDB are in progress with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Johns Hopkins University Medical School. There are still technical (and political) problems to be surmounted before GDB can be accessed using JANET. OMIM and GBASE are, however, already available. In order to familiarise users with the new service as rapidly as possible it is proposed to hold a number of one-day computing courses at the Resource Centre. These are in addition to the programme of five-day courses which were started in Cambridge in 1990 and which will move to Harrow in April 1991 (see HGMP Note 6). The proposed one-day courses are as follows:- INTRODUCTION TO HGMP COMPUTING FACILITY Alex Telford and Gary Williams (MRC CRC) 5 November, 19 November, 3 December GENOME DATA BASE Mary Jennings and Julia White (ICRF) 6 November, 20 November, 4 December The courses will start at 10.30 and will finish at 17.00. Lunch may be purchased at Northwick Park Hospital canteen. No previous computing experience is necessary but participants are expected to have the necessary biological knowledge. The courses will be subject to cancellation if there is insufficient demand. Further one-day courses will be mounted in 1991 if there is sufficient demand. Anyone wishing to stay overnight, to attend both courses, will have to make their own arrangements. To register for courses please apply to: Mrs. Christine Bates HGMP Resource Centre Clinical Research Centre Watford Road Harrow, Middlesex, UK. HA1 3UJ. Tel: 081 869 3446 Fax: 081 869 3807 These courses are free to registered HGMP users. There is a 200 Pound per course charge for others. For details of HGMP registration please apply to Christine Bates. --------- MEDICAL RESEARCH COUNCIL UK HUMAN GENOME MAPPING PROJECT ONE DAY COMPUTING COURSES AUTUMN 1990 HGMP Note 6 ------------------------------------------------------------------ The online computing service of the HGMP Resource Centre at Northwick Park, Harrow, is now operational. The service offers a wide variety of software and databases in the fields of genetics and molecular biology. One day introductory courses to the use of the facility are available (see HGMP Note 5). In addition we are offering a number of five-day residential courses in 1991. These courses assume little previous computing experience but do assume familiarity with the biological subject matter. Courses are of a highly practical nature providing hands-on experience. Course programme: Day 1. INTRODUCTORY MODULE. Introduction to the HGRC Computing Facility. Alex Telford and Gary Williams Days 2-3. LINKAGE AND CHROMOSOME MAPPING MODULE. Human genetic linkage analysis. Microbial Strain Data Network (MSDN). Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM). Genome Data Base (GDB: human chromosome mapping). GBASE (mouse chromosome mapping). Steve Bryant, John Yates, Elaine Ross, Martin Evans, Mary Jennings, Julia White Days 4-5. SEQUENCE ANALYSIS MODULE. Sequence database searching. Multiple sequence alignment and evolutionary studies. Prediction of function from DNA and protein sequences. Michelle Ginsburg, Martin Bishop, Rodger Staden, David Judge, Charlie Hodgman, Cyrus Chothia Dates of the courses: Cambridge: 7-11 January 1991 Harrow: 2-5 April 1991 (4 days only, no Introductory Module) 8-12 April 1991 1-5 July 1991 8-12 July 1991 15-19 July 1991 Course participants have in the past found it useful to attend all modules. However, there may be some flexibility with regard to attendance at selected modules rather than the whole course. Courses start at 09.30 and end at 17.30, except that the 2-5 April course will omit the Introductory Module and will start at 10.30. Accommodation in Harrow will be provided at Harrow School and transport will be available between the School and the Resource Centre. To register for the courses please apply to: Mrs Christine Bates HGMP Resource Centre Clinical Research Centre Watford Road, Harrow, Middlesex, UK. HA1 3UJ. Tel: 081 869 3446 Fax: 081 869 3807 These courses are free to registered HGMP users (there will be a charge of 30.00 Pounds per night for dinner, bed and breakfast at Harrow School). Others will be subject to a charge of 200 Pounds for the Introductory Module and 400 Pounds for each of the other modules (plus the charge for any board and lodging). -------
