B2G@CU.NIH.GOV (04/12/91)

The NIH and the DOE recently established the NIH-DOE
Joint Working Group on the Mouse. The NIH and DOE
currently have four other joint working groups: physical
mapping, sequencing, informatics, and the ethical, legal
g; informatics; and social, legal and
gal and
social issues.

The mission of the Joint Working Group on the Mouse, in
general, will be to facilitate the implementation of the
five-year program goals, establish research priorities,
identify research, training and technical needs, and
coordinate the research activities of U.S. researchers
with that of researchers in other countries, especially
Europe and Japan. The Working Group reports to the NIH
Program Advisory Committee on the Human Genome and the
corresponding advisory committee of the Department of
Energy.

The members of the Joint Working Group are: Verne Chapman,
Roswell Park Cancer Center; Neal Copeland, NCI-Frederick
Cancer Research and Development Center; Frank Costantini,
Columbia University; William Dove, University of Wisconsin;
Joe Nadeau, The Jackson Laboratory; Roger Reeves, The Johns
Hopkins University; Dr. Janet Rossant, Mt. Sinai Hospital,
Toronto, Ontario, Canada; Oliver Smithies, University of
North Carolina; Richard Woychik, Oak Ridge National
Laboratory.

The first meeting of the Joint Working Group will be May 1
in Bethesda, Maryland. The group plans to meet twice a
year. Minutes will be made available to interested
individuals; in addition, a summary of each meeting will
appear on the Genome Bulletin Board.
