As part of the recently awarded center's grant for mapping of human chromosome 22, we are interested in receiving applications for two postdoctoral research associate positions. Both positions will involve interactions with researchers at the DuPont Merck Pharmaceutical Co. and Children's Hospital/Univ. of Pennsylvania Medical School. Candidates must therefore have good interpersonal skills and be willing to work as team members with other center participants. Project 1 involves the construction of a chromosome 22 specific library from flow-sorted material in the bacteriophage P1 cloning system. These clones will be used in conjunction with chromosome 22 specific YAC clones (derived by others in the center) to generate an overlapping contig map of the chromosome and STS (sequence tagged site) markers. Project 2 involves developing new technologies for fluoresence in situ hybridization mapping. Novel fluorescence tagged nucleotides are currently being used in conjunction with 3-D fluorescence microscopy for rapid and accurate interphase mapping of chromosome 22. Successful candidates can expect to learn state of the art technology with respect to genome mapping and analysis. In addition, there will be ample opportunity to gain exposure to the role of genetics in both a pharmaceutical company and a medical school research environment, and to establish collaborations designed to meet the candidate's particular research interests. Candidates must be willing to relocate and begin the projects in the near future.
