[rec.aquaria] Lighting for Acrylic Tank

xanthian@saturn.ADS.COM (Metafont Consultant Account) (01/19/90)

Yeah, the circular 22 watt lights are really easy; I just bought a
cheap (99 cent) lamp socket and cord, screwed it together with the
light ballast, and the whole mess is sitting loose on top of my tank.
The only disadvantage is that I have to invert the loose plastic cover
that came with the tank to cover the center access hole every couple
of weeks, because the light tends to soften and curve it.

I'm not about to try plants in a tank with a couple of (large and
growing) goldfish living on catfood, but the light sure can grow
algae! I scrub the tank (clear) walls with a greenie every week or
two so I can see the fish. ;-) Of course, I run the light 24 hours a
day as a burglarly preventative, which might have some added effect.
