The CCTA Introductory Report on CSCW
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The UK Central Computing and Telecommunications
Agency (CCTA) supplies knowledge and advice about
the planning, purchase, implementation and use of
IT to UK Government Departments. CCTAs Advanced
Concepts Branch undertakes wide ranging
investigative and comparative work to assess
upcoming technologies which may benefit
government in the future. The Advanced Concepts
Branch has identified Computer Supported
Cooperative Work (CSCW) as being one such
potentially benificial technology and has embarked
on a 5 year evaluation of CSCW.
In November 1989 Paul Wilson of Computer
Sciences Company was contracted by the Advanced
Concepts Branch to provide two documents to
support the establishment of CCTA's CSCW effort:
- an initial report on CSCW to introduce the
subject to central government departments
- a workplan specifying the CSCW evaluation
activities to be undertaken, and outputs to be
produced, by the Advanced Concepts Branch over
the next 5 years.
The introductory report provides a broad overview
of CSCW's origins, components, products, research
community, applications, benefits and
disadvantages. The document will be jointly
published by CCTA and Computer Sciences Company
in the autumn of 1990, and will be publily
available worldwide as well as being distributed
within UK government circles. The title and contents
of the report are:
"Introducing Computer Supported Cooperative Work:
an appraisal for potential government and business
users"
