Preliminary Announcement & Call for Papers
E C S C W - 91

Second European Conference on Computer-Supported 
Cooperative Work
September 25-27, 1991,  Amsterdam, The Netherlands

The conference will be an interdisciplinary and international 
forum for the presentation of the latest empirical work in 
CSCW; for the discussion, critique, and development of 
underlying theory and methodology; and for free exchange of 
ideas, difficulties, and dilemmas in technical support for 
cooperative working.



SUGGESTED TOPICS FOR PAPERS AND PANELS:

Theory & Methodology 

Contributions to a theoretical basis for CSCW including: 
- -   Technology in relation to organisation, social behaviour, and 
group process 
- -   Relevance of frameworks and conceptualisations from 
related disciplines.(anthropology, cognitive science, 
computer science, engineering, linguistics,.logic, 
organisation theory, sociology, systems theory, etc.) 
- -   Problems of context, self-reference and unique processes 
- -   Contributions to general theories & perspectives on 
cooperation 
- -   CSCW design principles

Applications and Practice 

- -   Experiences with CSCW applications (office and factory 
systems; adult education, distance learning and classroom 
systems; remote and face-to-face collaboration; multi-
media applications; project management; meeting support; 
design and co-authoring support; community support; etc.) 
- -   Empirical studies of work processes 
- -   Empirical studies of cross-cultural working 
- -   Practical experiences of design methods 
- -   Underlying technologies in relation to the experiences of 
users 
- -   Small or inexpensive changes that have made significant 
differences to work practices

In the Applications section, emphasis will be placed on 
empirical experience and accounts of organisation, prototypes, 
and CSCW applications. Untested designs will not be accepted. 
Authors of application papers should reference and specify 
differences from similar designs; provide an analysis of actual 
and target user groups; and give an account of ways in which 
evaluation is planned, or problems of evaluation encountered.

Authors of application papers are encouraged to provide 
demonstrations.


Analysis, Critique & Evaluation 

- -   Analyses of socio-economic, political and power factors in 
CSCW .development and applications 
- -   Critiques of existing applications and practices 
- -   Explicit evaluation methods -- experiences and pitfalls



SUBMISSIONS: 

Full papers must be submitted. Abstracts will not be accepted. 
Papers must be in English, and not longer than 15 pages/5,000 
words, including figures, tables, references, and appendices. 
Five copies of the paper should be submitted on A4 sized paper 
to the address below.  Papers received via E-mail are not 
sufficient.
Videos and multi-media presentations should not exceed 20 
minutes in length.
Proposals are invited for panels, workshops, and 
demonstrations. Proposals should be 2/3 pages, and include 
title; description and relevance; and the names of contributers 
who have already agreed to participate in the session.

Submission Deadline: Received in Amsterdam by 31st. January 
1991 
Notification of Acceptance: Sent out 18th. February 1991 
Final/revised version of papers due: (Date to be announced) 
Advance Conference Registration Deadline: 31st. July 1991
