The November 19, 1990 New York Times has a front page article by John Markow (NYT science editor) about the NSA and its efforts to continually deny export licenses of encryption equipment. IBM was involved with some heavy negotiations (pleading?) and ended up having a U.S. version and an export version of some type of mainframe. He repeatedly made the point that the U.S. computer companies are not competitive with foreign companies in the international market place because of this. He also mentioned that Lotus Notes has a weakened encryption feature when it is exported. It is nice to see this get front page attention. Paul E. Baclaski peb@autodesk.com
