INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
AND COORDINATION
IN ORGANIZATIONS OF THE 1990s
Symposium Chairman:
Professor Thomas W. Malone
Patrick J. McGovern Professor of Information Systems
Director, Center for Coordination Science
Date:
Wednesday, April 17, 1991
Location:
Kresge Auditorium, MIT
Sponsored by the Industrial Liaison Program
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Today, more and more companies are installing computer networks
that connect their employees to each other and to other
companies. But how can companies use these new technologies to
organize themselves more productively and to coordinate more
effectively with their customers and suppliers? The new MIT
Center for Coordination Science conducts multidisciplinary
research to help understand these questions. This symposium will
describe work underway on the first anniversary of the Center's
opening. Presentations will include descriptions of new computer-
based tools (such as Groupware and Computer-Supported Cooperative
Work) that are being developed at MIT and elsewhere to help
people make group decisions, manage complex projects, and shorten
product design and delivery cycles. Discussions will also focus
on how people work together now and how these new technologies
can help create new organizational structures such as Networked
Organizations, Value-Added Partnerships, and Electronic
Materials.
