		CSCW Developers Workshop
		========================

		Developing Open CSCW Systems
	ECSCW'91, Amsterdam, 24th September, 1991

A CSCW Developers Workshop will be held in conjunction with
ECSCW'91 the 2nd European Conference on CSCW in
Amsterdam on the 24th September, 1991. The workshop is
being organised in conjunction with the COST-14 COTECH
working group on Models of Open Cooperative Applications
and will focus on the problems of developing open CSCW
systems.

What are Open CSCW Systems ?
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Open CSCW systems are systems designed to support
cooperative work in an open manner. "Open" can be interpreted
in several ways

	* Systems which can be tailored to particular work
	  practices, models or conventions.

	* Systems which support the integration of families of
tools to provide an integrated work environment for
	  both individuals and groups.

Many CSCW open systems are designed with the intention of
supporting cooperative processes: activities performed by
groups and with specific (although not necessarily well
articulated) goals, such as paper writing or software
development.

Goals of the Workshop
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
The goals of the workshop are to:

	* Bring together researchers and practitioners on all
aspects of the problems associated with
	  conceptualizing, designing and implementing open
	  CSCW systems.

	* Identify and discuss appropriate theoretical and
practical models which are suitable to describe the
tailoring of open CSCW systems.. This applies both to
tailoring to support work practices and models and
	  mechanisms for tool integration.

	* Identify and discuss the "hard issues" related to
	  implementing open CSCW systems.

	* Identify problems with current approaches and suggest
	  possible solutions.

	* Identify open issues, both theoretical and practical,
related to open CSCW systems, and identify directions
for future work. Examples of such issues include:

		- Supporting Interoperability among open
		   CSCW systems
		- Self-adapting open CSCW systems
		- Integrating open CSCW systems into
		  existing support environments and
process models: How should this be
achieved and what are the effects ?

This list of goals is not intended to be complete, but rather an
indication of the kinds of topics we wish to discuss at the
workshop.

Participation
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
To ensure a coherent workshop, and because attendance is
limited, admission will be by invitation only. Invitations will be
issued in response to a 3-5 page position paper. The paper
should address your work relative to the issues outlined above.
We encourage position papers from anyone working in the field
with a vested interested in the development of CSCW systems.

If you wish to participate send 4 copies of your position paper
to:
