[net.followup] Censorship: An open letter to Tim Maroney and UCNC

kurt@fluke.UUCP (Kurt Guntheroth) (05/09/84)

.
In my opinion, censorship of this sort reflects far more unfavorably on the
organization involved than the most improper statements imaginable from one
of it's members. In the past I have read submissions of yours (Tim Maroney)
and have variously agreed, disagreed, and thought it was a waste of network
bandwidth. Never have I considered that you be barred from the net, (but
perhaps I wished you'd go away.)

This is an issue of censorship, not license. Since there is no extant
policy for use of the usenet, and no policy for use from your site, I feel
the administration has/had absolutely no right to lift your privileges. I
feel any censorship is contrary to the spirit of freedom existing in this
country with respect to communication. I feel especially strongly that
censorship based on personal opinions of what is appropriate, applied on a
case-by-case basis is totally inappropriate.
