[comp.lang.perl] Perl Tutorial?

jak9213@helios.TAMU.EDU (John Kane) (01/04/90)

After following this group for a while, installing perl, and reading the
man pages, I still don't really know how to use perl.

I do know how to use awk, the shell (sh, csh), and sort of understand
sed (haven't really needed it, or didn't think so anyway).

What I do need is something that will point me in the right direction as
far as getting started in using perl. I keep feeling that I am missing
out on a great piece of software.

Randal and I are working on it. Someday you may have an S&W on your shelf.

In the meantime, you want to glare at some of the examples in the eg
directory. Maybe run an awk script through a2p and see how it corresponds.

It would be _wonderful_ if you were able to compile a book explaining
PERL _at least_ as elucidating as A. K. & W.'s "The AWK Programming
Language". Learning a language from man pages (even extensive ones)
and examining others' scripts, while an important step in the process,
is NOT very efficient (believe me, I've used this approach on about 5
languages, most of which I eventually got a reasonable command of, but
only after many arduous hours/days/weeks/months/years of study &
experimenting when a _GOOD_ tutorial would have made the job much less
frustrating and time-consuming (especially for self-taught hacks like
myself!)). PERL appears to be a fascinating language with considerable
potential for the kind of work I do, but the syntax IS intimidating,
so I will certainly welcome S&W's "The PERL Programming Language" (by
any name it should smell as sweet). PLEASE make a NETWORK-WIDE
ANNOUNCEMENT when it is available!
