Stick to Verbatim, Dysan, and Maxell. Avoid all the "private labels" unless
you can use the media color or jacket sealing marks or finish to match the
private label with a known manufacturer. Don't buy on price unless you
don't frustrate easily.

Hah! I just bought a boxes of Maxell floppies and got 3 that wouldn't
format. I returned these to the dealer for 3 new ones ... one of which
wouldn't format. Disgusted, I bought 2 boxes of Verbatim floppies --
and only 1 wouldn't format.

Bad disk drive? No, I checked that. Bad floppies. On two of them, you
could *see* the flaws.

Maybe Dysan ....

I have also been well pleased with 8" 3M diskettes. In a number of
boxes I have yet to find one with any flaws. Some of these diskettes
have been in nearly daily use for about two years.

A note regarding Verbatim Datalife -- They are guarenteed for double density.
Some machines, such as the DEC Rainbow 100, actually use QUAD density on these
disks. IF you do try to use Verbatim on a Rainbow, you may find yourself with
more problems than it's worth. I have been teaching a class of 140 students
on the Rainbow, and they have nothing but trouble with Verbatim.

Verbatim now makes a single sided, quad density version of their diskettes
for use with the DEC Rainbow. I have been using them for about two months
and have never had a problem. They come "pre-formated" just like the real
thing from DEC. Unfortunately I do not have them handy, so I can't quote the
part number. Your Verbatim dealer should be able to get them for you.

A propos diskettes, but not related to the topic in any other way.....

At my last company, my boss's mother-in-law was keen to get into the computer
act with the rest of the family, "Oh yes, we've got a computer atwork, too."
she said, "It uses fluffy disks..."

Meanwhile, the managing director, a stickler for precise english, launched
a competition for a name for these disks, other than diskettes (which he
abhored) and floppies which he thought was even worse.
