[net.columbia] Hydrogen Reserve on STS 9

philipl@bronze.UUCP (Philip Lantz) (10/15/83)

Two pounds of hydrogen sounds like an awfully small reserve. (I
imagine it did to Mark and to the people at AW&ST, or they wouldn't
have mentioned it!) Eight people can easily drink 2 pounds of H as
water a day! (Figure 1 liter/man/day = 0.24 lb of H per man per day.
I don't suppose they recover any of that?)

What is the total rate of usage, and what all is it used for? If
they only use a couple pounds a day, two pounds of reserve is
reasonable. I seem to remember that they don't use any for in-orbit
maneuvering. Do they use it for retro, or anything other than
electricity and water?
