composer@chem.bu.edu (Jeff Kellem) (08/18/90)
Hi everyone! I'm happy to announce the availability of a DRAFT (alpha) release of the TeXinfo version of the Perl manual, version 0.3, on chem.bu.edu. It's located in the /pub/perl-manual directory. The README file included below mentions the files available. At the moment, this is only available via anonymous ftp. For those that can't ftp, don't fret; I will be posting one of the later versions of the perl manual to comp.lang.perl, or at least making it available via a mail server. I'm hoping to get some feedback on this and do some reorganization before posting it on comp.lang.perl. And, remember, this is a *DRAFT* copy of the TeXinfo version of the manual. [ Note: Some of this will be redundant by inclusion of the README below. ] Bug reports should go to `bug-perl-manual@chem.bu.edu'. The mailing list `perl-manual@chem.bu.edu' is for discussion of the TeXinfo version of the perl manual. To be added to the discussion list, send a note to `perl-manual-request@chem.bu.edu'. Hope you find this useful! -jeff Jeff Kellem Internet: composer@chem.bu.edu README file for TeXinfo manual for PERL -- Version 0.3 ====================================================== Date: 18 August 1990 12:30am This is a DRAFT copy! Actually, this is just taken from the `Introduction' of the TeXinfo version of the perl manual. Ok, so I'm lazy... ;-) This file will change in the future! The files included in the chem.bu.edu:~ftp/pub/perl-manual directory are: README this file... ;-) [ All of the following files are compressed, of course. Don't forget to transfer in binary (image) mode. ] perl-info.Z Formatted Info Files perl-info-1.Z Formatted Info Files perl-info-2.Z Formatted Info Files perl-info-3.Z Formatted Info Files perl-info-4.Z Formatted Info Files perl-info-5.Z Formatted Info Files perl.texinfo.Z TeXinfo source To install the formatted info files in your emacs info tree, move the `perl-info*' files to your Info-directory (possibly `/usr/gnu/info', `/usr/local/emacs/info' or something along those lines). Then add a line similar to the following to the file `Info-directory/dir'. * Perl: (perl.info). DRAFT of PERL manual (in TeXinfo, of course ;-). Description *********** This TeXinfo manual describes PERL, the Practical Extraction and Report Language. The manual is currently, mainly a conversion of Larry Wall's original unix-style man page into TeXinfo format. In the future, new sections will be added, such as tutorial sections and more examples. The TeXinfo version of the perl manual is maintained and distributed by Jeff Kellem <composer@chem.bu.edu>. There is a mailing list for discussion of the TeXinfo version of the perl manual and a mailing address for reporting bugs in this version of the manual. They are: *Mailing Address* *What The Address Is For* perl-manual-request@chem.bu.edu administrivia (add/drop requests) perl-manual@chem.bu.edu discussion of the TeXinfo perl manual bug-perl-manual@chem.bu.edu reporting bugs in the perl manual If you would like to join the discussion of the perl manual, send a note to perl-manual-request@chem.bu.edu Note ==== I still consider this manual incomplete; I hope to add more sections such as tutorials, etc. With your suggestions and bug reports, this manual will continue to get better and better and (hopefully) make learning perl easier. Thanks! Enjoy... :-) -jeff Jeff Kellem Internet: composer@chem.bu.edu
