Why is it that newlines (actual newlines, not "\n"s) are allowed in
string constants but not patterns?  It seems inconsistent.

(Personally, I think newlines in string constants are the work of the
Devil...)

May I take this opportunity of emphasizing that there is no
cannibalism in the British Navy.  Absolutely none, and when I
