Some more details on an opportunity to sight STS-9 this evening (Wednesday): At my location (northeast NJ, near New York) the shuttle will rise at 6:34pm in the northwest, pass toward the south reaching a maximum elevation of 29 degrees in the southwest, and set at 6:42 pm in the southeast. However, at 6:39:11 pm, it will enter the earth's shadow while due south and at an elevation of 18 degrees. I would be interested in any observation reports, particularly exact timings of the shadow crossing, to gauge the accuracy of the orbital elements I have. Give it a try! Phil Karn
