composer@chem.bu.edu (Jeff Kellem) (10/30/90)

A new edition of the Texinfo version of the PERL manual is available which
includes recent additions to PERL as of version 3.0 patchlevel 37. There
is a patch, errata-patch-0.3a-0.3b.Z, to bring the Texinfo source from
edition 0.3a to the current 0.3b. New pre-formatted info files are also
included.

As a reminder, the Texinfo version of the perl manual can be obtained via
anonymous ftp in the

	chem.bu.edu:/pub/perl-manual

Hope you enjoy the Texinfo version of the perl manual!

Cheers...

the README file for the Texinfo version of the perl manual.

README file for Texinfo manual for PERL -- Edition 0.3b
(for perl version 3.0 patchlevel 37)

This is a DRAFT copy! Actually, this is just taken from the `Introduction'
of the Texinfo version of the perl manual. Ok, so I'm lazy... ;-) This
file will change in the future!

The files included in the chem.bu.edu:~ftp/pub/perl-manual directory are:

README this file... ;-)

[ All of the following files are compressed, of course. Don't forget to
transfer in binary (image) mode. ]

perl-info.Z Formatted Info Files
perl-info-1.Z Formatted Info Files
perl-info-2.Z Formatted Info Files
perl-info-3.Z Formatted Info Files
perl-info-4.Z Formatted Info Files
perl-info-5.Z Formatted Info Files

perl.texinfo.Z Texinfo source

[ The errata patches probably aren't that necessary. Just grab the actual
info files; no formatting is needed. :-) ]

errata-patch-0.3-0.3a.Z diffs between edition 0.3 and 0.3a
errata-patch-0.3a-0.3b.Z	diffs between edition 0.3a and 0.3b

To install the formatted info files in your emacs info tree, move the
`perl-info*' files to your Info-directory (possibly `/usr/gnu/info',
`/usr/local/emacs/info' or something along those lines). Then add a line
similar to the following to the file `Info-directory/dir'.

* Perl: (perl.info). DRAFT of PERL manual (in Texinfo, of course ;-).

Description
***********

This Texinfo manual describes PERL, the Practical Extraction and Report
Language. The manual is, currently, mainly a conversion of Larry Wall's
original unix-style man page into Texinfo format. In the future, new
sections will be added, such as tutorial sections and more examples.

The Texinfo version of the perl manual is maintained and distributed by
Jeff Kellem. His electronic mail address is composer@chem.bu.edu.
There is a mailing list for discussion of the Texinfo version of the
perl manual and a mailing address for reporting bugs in this version of
the manual. They are:

*Mailing Address* *What The Address Is For*
     perl-manual-request@chem.bu.edu administrivia (add/drop requests)
perl-manual@chem.bu.edu discussion of the Texinfo perl manual
bug-perl-manual@chem.bu.edu reporting bugs in the perl manual

If you would like to join the discussion of the perl manual, send a note to

     perl-manual-request@chem.bu.edu

Note
====

I still consider this manual incomplete; I hope to add more sections such
as tutorials, etc. With your suggestions and bug reports, this manual will
continue to get better and better and (hopefully) make learning perl
easier. Thanks!

Enjoy... :-)
