I sincerely hope that this article was meant to be a joke and not any attempt at a serious commentary. If this is an example of the literacy of a graduated engineering professional, heaven help us all. Maybe if we are lucky, it was written by one of the few sub-teenager's on the net. I cannot believe how badly this person has managed to mangle the english language. Just about every rule of grammar is ripped to bloody shreds. Misspellings, bad puncuation, no knowledge of capitalization, poor sentence construction; it's an english teacher's nightmare. Even Don Henley's name was spelled wrong (and that's the last straw). I can tolerate a reasonable amount of bad grammer -- after all you can't expect everyone to be an english expert, but this causes me to almost lose my appetite. If you can't communicate your thoughts in somewhat of a clear manner, how can you command the respect of your peers or the members of other professions. -- Walt Tucker Tektronix, Inc. #R:tekecs:-334100:ecn-ee:21800002:000:591 ecn-ee!davy Dec 14 23:17:00 1983 Oh Christ, here we go again. We've been through this garbage in at least half a dozen newsgroups already, and it never gets us anywhere. So some people aren't so hot at spelling, and don't care to use a spelling checker. So what? I understood what he meant, didn't you? Besides, if you want to nit-pick, you mispelled "grammar" in your third paragraph. Let's leave net.columbia for discussions about the shuttle, and send petty gripes about spelling and grammar to net.flame where they belong. Flames will be cheerfully forwarded to /dev/null. --Dave Curry decvax!pur-ee!davy

What is your definition of illiterate? Someone who doesn't know the difference between a plural and a possessive, perhaps? Dave Seaman ..!pur-ee!pucc-k:ags

I think the misplaced apostrophe in the title of the original article was not an accident. a A reply would have been in better taste. People who make damaging remarks about other in public, usually have a self ser- ving motive. You just left yourself wide open to be criticized by others. In the future, do ityour thing via mail. I really don't think the rest of the net would mind. note: i hope this statement isn't too simple for you. -- ====================================================================== signed: Rod Hart (wa3mez) Chesapeake & Potomac Tel. I use the "n" key in net.flame to avoid this silly argument. I don't like to use the "n" key in net.columbia to avoid the *same* silly argument. Take the hint, guys, and MOVE OUT! You're not welcome here. Now on to something designated for this newsgroup... Has anyone heard what the final determination of cause was for the flames the shuttle experienced during landing? I've heard not a word since the statements made immediately after the landing. Thanks, B.K. Cobb
