I ftp'd the perl.4.0.beta from J.P.L. this morning. It installs readily on the SUM 3/80 O/S 4.0.3 gnu C 1.39 using gnu C malloc and gnumake. The make test shows "All tests successful" u=3.6333 s=2.95 cu=24.75 cs=17.95 . Now to wrap it up and install on my NeXTslab-2.0 . I'll report on NeXT later.

Correct make, test, and install, Sun386i/SunOS 4.0.2, Sun CC, Gnu Make 3.59. All tests successful. Only one hitch - At every stage (make all - make test - make install) Make (both GNU and the system (Sun) make) is insisting on recompiling *everything* from the .c level forward. I don't remember this having been a problem before, but I could be wrong. I'm sorry to say that I haven't been able to debug the Makefile yet, so I can't tell you why this is happening. Just wanted to say it compiles and runs OK. -- Internet: jladwig@forsoil.lter.umn.edu Bitnet: jladwig@UMINN1.BITNET Fidonet: John Ladwig 1:282/8.19 Phone: W: (612)624-3459 or 624-7784 Fax: (612) 625-5212

Hate to break the chain of success stories, but ... Looks like "Configure" now determines (correctly) that I'm a MIPS using the BSD environment. However, there are quite a few problems. It scans the SYSV libc.a to find symbols, so things like bcopy aren't found. I beat on it for a few hours, but didn't get a successful build out of it. I don't have time to work on it anymore right now, so I'll have to send you the changes after the beta period is over. -- Randall S.
