Below is a section of a set of records for each date from June 6, 1989 to the present. Each record contains a command and a number to indicate how many times that command was used that day. (I don't know beforehand what commands I'll find in the file (its 8000+ lines long)). I'll be using awk for now, but can perl be used to extract monthly and overall totals for each command in the file? I ordered a copy of Programming Perl yesterday, but I need this soon.
