[comp.lang.perl] Extracting information from a set of records?

eric@ux.acs.umn.edu (Eric D. Hendrickson) (03/07/91)

Below is a section of a set of records for each date from June 6, 1989 to
the present. Each record contains a command and a number to indicate
how many times that command was used that day. (I don't know beforehand
what commands I'll find in the file (its 8000+ lines long)). I'll be
using awk for now, but can perl be used to extract monthly and overall
totals for each command in the file?

I ordered a copy of Programming Perl yesterday, but I need this soon.

Thanks,
