[soc.religion.islam] Drugs and Islam

gene@bu-cs.BU.EDU (Gene Itkis) (12/06/89)

I would like to ask about Islam's view towards drugs. I suspect that it is
similar to alchohol, i.e. a tabu. However, it seems that some drug practices
has been present in some "islamic cultures". Could someone try to summarize the
issue, please. Thanks in advance.

[ Alcohol is mentioned by name in the Quran (see 2:219, 5:90-91). To the best
of my knowledge, other drugs are not. --Naim]

My personal belief concerning drugs as a muslim is that it is completely haram.
MY reasoning is that Islam prohibits muslims to commit ANY bodily harm (eg
cutting oneself). Therefore, since we all know that by taking drugs we are
slowly killing ourselves intentionally, it is also HARAM.
