I would like for some good soul to post this article in soc.religion.islam for
my attempts to do so have failed. Apparently articles posted in this newsgroup
are "monitored" and are mailed to a moderator at Rutgers I believe. At that
point the articles can be "perhaps screened" and posted to the newsgroup.

Thank you...

And thank you for the repsonses... I would like to clarify one issue... The
part about ignorance was describing my level of knowledge or consciousness not
the Muslims I "interviewed." It has concerned me if there were any relations
among the academic Muslim groups and "Black" Muslims or better yet Bilalians.
So instead of keeping my questions to myself I have begun to ask "simple"
questions-- and perhaps if there are little or no communication between the
groups, then perhaps discussions like this one will aid in establishing them.

Also from my experiences with some foreign students, Muslim and others, I at
times get a feeling that there is some fear, disgust, or barrier which these
students possess which prevents them from associating with me (a Black student)
perhaps on the basis of my race. I am one who freely associates with various
ethnic and religious groups and have a mission to learn from and communicate
with a variety of people. If there exist any prejudices on the part of these
students then I would like to be instrumental in helping alleviate any tensions
or inhibitions they may have. I would like to be instrumental in providing a
different perspective to them which may ameliorate cultural exchange.

Finally, I have taken special interest in the behavior and commitment of
the Muslims (Bilalian or domestic and international) to the extent of great
admiration of course minus rhetoric of white men being devils as preached by
some Black Muslims and a conflict between Muslims and Hindus.

: Assalaam - u - alaikum
:
: I am just curious for I have been receiving mixed signals here at IIT.
:
: I wanted to find out if the several Muslim Associations which have become
: "institutionalized" within several American universities (including here at
: IIT) have any affiliation or communicate with some of the established Muslim,
: particularly Black Muslim (as coined by mainstream america), sects in the
: United States. From my research, a few Pakistanis in particular have indicated
: that they occasionally pay homage to nearby Mosques located in the heart of
: Chicago's Black community. Even some have acknowledged and are cognizant of
: some of the good deeds of the Muslims in Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles in
: their attempt to rid the Black community of drugs and illicit behavior.
:
: However, some "international" Muslims are not aware that there exists a "Black"
: Muslim community and even some have little respect for the American Muslims
: per negative information emanated from a sometimes hostile media.
:
: What are your opinions of Minister Louis Farrakhan who claims the leadership
: position of the "Black" Muslims? What are the opinions on the successful
: attempts by Muslims of ridding inner-city communities of drugs? Have you
: heard of The Honorable Elijah Muhammad and Malcolm X - whose Muslim name was
: El-Hajj Malik Shabazz?
:
: Many have heard of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Muhammad Ali - by the way Casius
: Clay received the name Muhammad Ali from Elijah Muhammad and after accepting
: Islam as his religion. Also, Muhammad Ali, in Kentucky and just before
: engaging in an illicit act with a white female, was encouraged instead to attend
: a meeting where Malcolm X was speaking by a few Muslims who were observing
: him.
:
: I am planning to talk with a dignitary within the Muslim Association here about
: these same issues.
:
: I have been afraid to ask but I have come to realize that ignorance hurts more
: and so I am driven to be daring in asking.
:
: Please I would appreciate any help from the Muslim community. And I hope I have
: not opened a Pandora's Box.
:
: Thank you dearly
