[soc.religion.islam] Muslim Dealings With Non-Believers

naim@eecs.nwu.edu (Naim Abdullah) (02/14/90)

Recently Omar cited Al-Imran and Al-Baqra and used these to (apparently)
claim that Muslims shouldn't have anything to do with Christians and Jews.

Fortunately, Al-Momtahina clarifies the situation. I quote
from "The Koran, The First Tafsir in English" by Mufassir Mohammad Ahmad, 1979.

Al-Momtahina Chapter 60,

Verse 8

Allah does not forbid you to show goodwill and kindness towards those
rejectors of the faith who do not fight you in matters of the faith,
and who do not evict you from your homes. Deal with them justly and
remember that Allah loves people who act justly.

Verse 9

Allah forbids you to have friendly relations with those people who declare
war on you in matters of religion, and who evict you from your homes and
support others in expelling you. Those believers who treat such rejectors of
the faith as friends are violators of Allah's commands; and they have deeply
offended Him.

End of quote.

I think verse 9 clarifies the extracts from Al-Imran and Al-Baqra.
