[soc.religion.islam] Nominalism and 'backsliding' in Islam

randy@uutopia.dell.com (Randy Price) (11/04/90)

This is a question to members of the Islamic community in the U.S. A
problem that exists in the Christian Church in the U.S. also appears to
be a problem in the Islamic community and I am wondering if it is
considered a widespread problem.

I have have encountered a number of Muslims who call themselves such,
but in fact display no signs of belief at all. They abide by none of
the creeds and laws of Islam, but call themselves Muslims anyway. The
questions are these: 1.)is this a problem in the world, or merely a
manifestation of general American lack of commitment? 2.)How does
orthodox Islam deal with the ideal of Islam in name only?

Thanks,
Randy
