[soc.religion.islam] pepsi haraam

raza@cs.heriot-watt.ac.uk (Z. Raza Hussain) (01/19/91)

a friend informed me yesterday that the well known soft drink pepsi
(sold all over the world) is indeed haraam - this is because it's
supposed to contain PEPSIN (pigs blood?). anyone got any comments/info
relating to this?

how should we react to this kind of information ? ie. how seriously
should we view it ? (assuming we want to behave as _good_ muslims) it has
to be noted that many such reports are always apparent.

could it be the case that this is indeed true that pepsi produces a
halaal version for muslim countries (eg. Pakistan) ?

"Pepsi-cola" got its name because it was first sold as a tonic good
for digestion & peptic ulcers, not because it was made from digestive
juices. The book "Big Secrets" by William Poundstone analyzes both
Pepsi and Coke; no weird stuff in Pepsi found.

On a related note, Coca-cola contains a small amount of alcohol
(something like .25%, not enough to get drunk on), and, as far as
I know, still uses de-cocanized coca leaves, which means it has a
very small but not detectable amount of cocaine. It was also sold
as a tonic when it had more cocaine in it.

Pepsi says years ago there was (hence the name, Pepsi), but there
hasn't been for many years. Nice to know, given Coca Cola's record with
regard to cooperation with South Africa, etc.

Salam Brother,
I was who sent an article about the Coke via another friend. What I was display
ing there was a doubt on the possibility that coke might have some animal produ
cts in the form of glicerin. I read the original posting from Soc.cult.jewish.
Therein, the autor was claiming that it is certain that glycerin exists in coke
. But no mentioning from which animal (from cow, sheep or pig?). Actually it wo
uld be extremely difficult to find it since the firm who produces coke keeps se
cret its ingredient as widely known. So as a result there id a doubt in case of
coke and I thought it would be better to go away from anything which bears dou
bt (here foodwise) as mentioned by a hadis, if I am not wrong. Additionally I d
on't think it is a good idea to drink somethink which nobody knows its precise
ingredient for our own health. AHMET.
