[soc.religion.islam] Religion primer

Being a Jew and disgusted with the Mideast war in general and the USA's and
Israel's snuggling in particular, I'm interested in reading up on
Islam. Can anyone direct me towards a history and/or fundamental text?

Peter Awn, chairman of the Religion dept. at Columbia, strongly recomends
the Encyclopedia Islamacus. He also said the Encyclopedia of Religion is
very good. I haven't read either (too busy struggling through Rodinson's
_Muhammad_ and Denny's _Introduction to Islam_ - both good) but I trust
the expert.

I have already sent email directly to the original poster of this thread.

The more he studies of about Islam and Judaism, the
more he will see that they are more alike than different. For example,
the laws on ethical (non-destructive) behavior during a war--posted last
week--are shared by the two religions. If the original poster is trying
to understand the current situation in the Mideast, he will learn more
by studying our history of human frailty than by directing his interests
to an examination of religions in a competitive context.
