[rec.skydiving] Wind-tunnel

otto@vaxb.acs.unt.edu (12/06/90)

Hello, all. I'm not a jumper(yet) but I heard that there was a place
in Tennesee where one can simulate free-fall in a vertical wind-tunnel.

I would appreciate info onthis place(i.e. where in Tenn., how much it
costs, etc.) and if there were any other places like it in the U.S.
Please email me.

Thanks in advance,
***Mark

I also am not a jumper (yet!) but would like to spend some time in a wind
tunnel. Who ever makes a post, please include spots in or near California.
Thanks,

Well, the only one I know of (I am not a jumper and am about to
unsubscribe to this news group) is a place called Fly-Away in Las Vegas. Hope
that helps.

I had heard that this one had folded under the weight of insurance
premiums. Just hear-say, though.

I talked to the owner of the Fly-Away in TN about this recurring
rumor. He says the Vegas Fly-Away folded becasue the owner was able
to become a millionaire by selling the property. Seems that he'd
accidentally bought some good land cheap. The Fly-Away in Pigeon
Forge TN is the only one still existing in the U.S., other than a
military tunnel at Wright Patterson.

But I did see an ad in a recent "Skydiving" ad that was selling
reduced rates for pre-construction purchase of tunnel time. I forget
where it was to be, but it was going to be co-located with a major DZ
(Deland, Z-Hills, or somewhere else.)

Pretty neat to be able to do a skydive, with dirt-dives and post-dives
it in a wind tunnel.... :-)

I also seem to remember that the wind speeds were now as high as
terminal velocity (though that claim may have been for the Pigeon
Forge tunnel). It would be pretty neat to test fly a couple 'o
different jump suits (not baloon suits) without the bulky "annoyance"
of a rig.... :-)

Check the Dec. issue of "The Parachutist". There are ads. for a wind
tunnel in the central FL area. ( i don't have my copy handy). There
may be as many as two in the general area.

There is a wind tunnel down in Tampa, open right now. There is also
one being built down at z-hills, and they are pre-selling time at 1/2
price. Saw this in parachutist mag.
