Say- did this ever make it to your site? I believe something went wrong in my initial post. What follows is a formal proposal for a MODERATED news group, tentatively titled "Rec.Arts.Fiction". Given that the discussion regarding misc.writing has been (mostly) favorable, I think it's safe to assume that there's a good deal of interest in fiction on the net. However, as yet no group exists for the exclusive purpose of presenting short works of fiction to the net community. (Alt.prose often contains discussion threads- note the current one on wordprocessing- and seems oriented toward alternative forms of fiction such as sf/fantasy. This would offer more mainstream fare.) CHARTER: What I am proposing is a moderated group which would select the best piece of fiction every day (or week or month, depending on the flow of submissions) from a body of entries. The editorial board and moderating body of this group would include myself and a group of interested others. (Anyone who wants to know more about my credentials should mail to my address. Anyone who wants information on how to become a member of the editorial board should also mail to my address) Since the members of the board, as it currently stands, have radically different ideas about fiction, hopefully they will form a sort of jury capable of ensuring fair standards. Given the constricted writing market, I believe that such a group would attract the interest of authors who are not net users. (Rec.Arts.Fiction would receive submissions by U.S. as well as electronic mail.) Drawing from a greater variety of resources, I believe we can offer a higher quality of fiction than that normally seen on the net. More to the point, we can attract people who would normally never touch a computer, expanding the net's horizons. I know about the mailing lists concerning fiction. This is different. Please don't balk on this one; I really think it can work. I am willing to commit myself to it. As a postscript- we will only do this if it's cleared by the appropriate authorities- I believe I can get independent funding for this project. Therefore, we would be able to offer a prize to the "best" piece over a given length of time- say, the best story each month. If interest is such, we may expand this to include poetry. -Hartmanedward
