[comp.sys.ultrix] Booting a DECsystem 5000

osm@ox.com (Owen Scott Medd) (09/27/90)

Well, we have a nice shiny DECsystem 5000 in for evaluation. It's a brand
new machine, so I said "sure, we'll load Ultrix ourselves".

After hooking up the console (gee, why did they hide the instructions for
doing that off in some dinky little side manual instead of in the main
instructions?), I plunked my Ultrix 4.0 TK50 in the drive and did a
"boot -f tz(0,5)". Hmmm, what's this error message?

?STX: boot [many options, none of them -f]

But my 4.0 docs *and* the DEC*station* 5000 documentation say to boot this
way!

The system is only here till tomorrow afternoon.

Help!

in Rev 5.3C firmware (latest I've seen), some commands have changed.

        boot -f tz(0,5)
         is now
        boot 5/tz5

        setenv bootpath rz(0,0,0)vmunix
         is now
        setenv boot "5/rz0/vmunix -a"

a document detailing this is available for FTP from decuac in:
~ftp/public/postscript/DS5000_console_command_comparison.ps

Try, since you seem to have Very New ROMs,

	boot 5/tz0

or maybe

	boot 5/tz0/vmunix

other possibilities include

	boot 6/mop
	boot 5/rz0/vmunix

Note, as usual, that if you do this and it makes your machine explode,
you have only yourself to blame for listening to a guy in a research
lab instead of to your field service rep.

Cheers,
