UNC should let Maroney back on the net. He seems to be perfectly
capable of screwing up his own life with no help whatsoever from them.

An interesting situation for UNC. I believe that UNC has the
right to restrict people's access to the net from UNC accounts,
for the very reason that when you submit to the net from a site,
you are taken as a representative of that site. When you abuse
that right, it can cause other people at that site embarassment.
Some people mention how other students at UNC were quick to
"turn Tim in". There might be a reason for this.

I'm surprised at how quick people are to jump on the faculty at
UNC. They do not owe Tim a job there. They offered him one, on
the condition that he would not post to the net. I've seen the
postings that got him in trouble, and frankly, I can't blame them.
>From his own side of the story, it seems obvious that he tried
to push the limits every way he could, even when they were about
to restore his priveleges. If in the end, the faculty at UNC
acted with less than ultimate patience, who can blame them?

I'm sure you will never hear UNC's side of this story, and for
good reason. So stop judging the situation.

I think Tim Maroney is smart and has done some interesting
work. I just wish he would grow up.

I don't know about people who say that Tim really does not
represent UNC. Way back, last summer, when I began to consider
a college at which to donate four years of my life, and took a look
at some net sites. Back then tim maroney was about the only person
from unc to send outgoing news. That's got to be the biggest turn
off in the universe. I wouldn't have gone there even if I had been given
full scholarship, room and board, if I had to base my judgement on
unc!tim alone. (Since then of course, we have seen the faculty's end
of the deal). I have even had friends visit down there, and low and
behold, not all unc'ers are clones of Tim. However, old impressions are
hard to break, and I don't know if I can ever think of unc again without
thinking of that turkey, tim, who, in my opinion, got what he deserved.

I doubt if ANY college faculty would be foolhardy enough to try and
educate you if they knew you were content to let their netnews output
(from one person!) determine your picture of their college.
On the other hand, it would be obvious that you badly
	needed the education.

Certainly you're helping surpress Tim (and other, possibly more
deserving dissidents who might crop up at UNC) by giving anyone who
believes it "proof" that someone would regard UNC as bad because Tim
contributed netnews from there. Was this your intent? For my part,
you've about convinced me of your willingness to form lifetime opinions
without nearly enough information. Nice work.
