[net.columbia] Liftoff of Discovery

rjnoe@ihlts.UUCP (Roger Noe) (11/08/84)

Space shuttle Discovery lifted off from Kennedy Space Center precisely at
7:15 a.m. EST this morning, November 8. The second flight of Discovery
(the fourteenth shuttle mission) is to land back at KSC on Friday, November
16. The next mission which had been planned, a secret Defense Department
flight which was to launch December 8 with Challenger, has been postponed
a minimum of six weeks to repair a problem with a softening material under
Challenger's thermal tiles. NASA has not yet said what this will do to
the scheduling of Discovery's next flight, a Spacelab mission to study
life sciences. Launch for that had been scheduled for January 17.
