[net.followup] About the unc!tim namecalling

jj@rabbit.UUCP (Marmaduke Surfaceblow) (05/25/84)

I don't really feel that this article belongs in net.followup,
but it's being posted where I'm having to wade through the mire
of articles about unc!tim, censorship, and supposed fascism.
If you want me to post it somewhere else, too bad. I'm
not going to reply, I might not even read your note.

I don't see how all the name-calling about this subject is going to
solve anything.
First, it's certainly not going to clear up the problem
of censorship.
Second, we don't know the other half of the story. I don't see
how anyone can hope to make a judgement given one half of the story.
It's possible to get a tenetive view of the situation, but I can't see
how anyone can make up more of a case than that.
Third, calling other members involved in the debate fascists
or otherwise isn't going to solve anything, and using silly, emotionally
loaded sophistry to equate expectations of personal responsibility with
fascism isn't going to convince the supposed fascists <and only supposed,
as far as I'm concerned, since I think that people should
have responsibility for their own actions myself> of the error
of their ways, it's going to offend them, and reinforce their opinions
and expectations of the name-caller.

I'd like to request that this debate be moved to
net.flame, or net.politics, or perhaps net.legal, depending on
what part of the question is being asked, and that it be moved
permanantly OUT of net.general and net.followup, which are
<theoretically> reserved for new subjects of general interest.

I further request that (in all newsgroups other than net.flame)
correspondence be polite, without rancor, sophistry, or emotional manipulation,
and to the point.

Net use is a privelege, not a right. The net is a private creation,
consisting of a myriad of companines and individuals acting independantly,
and without any binding agreement. Any arguments to the contrary are
simply disregarding the reality of the net. Arguments to the effect
of "should be" are useless unless accompanied by a practical, popular,
and legal proposal of how to make the net a public entity.

	THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME
