Yeah, the two don't seem to like each other.  I don't know much about
xphoto - it is possible it only deals with 2-D FAX encoding?  Because
pbmtog3 and g3topbm only deal with 1-D...

  What version of the pbmplus package are you working with?

  The file /contrib/pbmplus.tar.Z in export.lcs.mit.edu's anonymous ftp spool
contains a very new release of the software.  It's quite possible that if
there are bugs in what you're using, they're fixed in the newer code.
