[comp.sys.m88k] Tektronix Scientific shutdown rumour

ggw%wolves@cs.duke.edu (Gregory G. Woodbury) (10/14/90)

A net.acquaintance who was working at Tektronix in Washington or Oregon
reports that they are abandoning the 88K workstation effort! Is this
just a rumour or has this been in the news and I missed it or what?

Am I way off base?

I've heard that they're looking for a buyer of the division within 60 days.
If none is forthcoming, they're closing it down...

Over there in France, a marketing friend of me boasted last september that
we can wait for a big change from 88k to "his" risc by october. Now we're
only the 15th, so ...
The strangest of all is that when I mentionned this to another marketing
friend (of another 88K vendor), he seems to agree, reluctantly through, to
the "unavoidability" of this move ...

No, you're not. I can confirm this. I've received an official press release
from Tektronix the Netherlands, in which they announce that they stop
producing 88K workstations, and they leave the Workstations market.
De hardware will be supported for at least 3 years.

The Tektronix 88k-based workstation group is shut down. A skeleton
staff remains to clear things up, but new systems are not being sold.
The "shutdown within 60 days if no buyer is found" announcement was
just to satisfy the regulatory agencies. Our pay continues for 60
days, but we're supposed to stay away from work.

You seem to be right on. Digital News (Page 5 -- October 15, 1990)
states that Tek is going out of the workstation business. If a buyer
is not found is 60 days, the company will turn out the lights.

Anyone want to buy a workstation company? The article claims the
control 0.6 percent of the workstation market.
