FOR RELEASE FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 1990 Morristown, N.J. -- AT&T's UNIX System Laboratories, Inc (USL) today announced that it has established a liason agreement with the 88open Consortium, an independent organization of software and systems suppliers supporting Motorola's 88000 family of RISC mircoprocessors. Under this agreement the two organizations will coordinate activities in the areas of UNIX System V Release 4 compatibility, independent software vendor (ISV) programs, and support for industry standards. "By creating a formal association with 88open, and by continuing to work closely with SPARC International, MIPS, and Intel processor groups, we can ensure close cooperation in our mutual efforts to increase the number of shrinkwrapped applications for UNIX System V Release 4" said Larry Dooling, president of USL. "We're delighted with the opportunity to work closer with AT&T's USL on expanding the UNIX System market," said Tom Mace, president of the 88open Consortium. "88open is where 88000-releated UNIX System decisions are made. AT&T's participation in 88open and other such groups shows the increased emphasis being placed on customer relations and support." Mace said that USL's association with 88open will result in increased coordination in ISV programs. The two organizations are already cooperating in a wide range of activities, including a strong program to bring DOS ISVs into the UNIX System market. Rikki Kirzner, Senior Industry Analyst of Dataquest, Inc. noted both USL and 88open will gain from increased cooperation "USL gets an opportuity to support its customers, including such key companies as Unisys, Data General and Motorola in a highly visible way. At the same time, it gains insight into 88open's binary testing technology, and 88open gets better coordination with USL. It's a win for everyone concerned," Kirzner said.
