A soft error from a SCSI device means that the device encountered an error while performing an operation, but nonetheless the operation completed successfully. SCSI devices do not offer more specific information about the nature of such errors; the conditions which cause the reporting of a soft error may vary from one drive manufacturer or model to another. You may wish to arrange for the logging of these messages using the syslog facility; see the syslog.conf(5) man page for details. Increasing frequencies or sudden spates of soft errors may indicate that a drive could benefit from maintenance attention. Finally, make sure that all drives, not just those which have reported errors, are being archived regularly. -- Data General customers who are experiencing problems with their systems or have questions about DG products are strongly urged to contact their Data General support representative for assistance. --Data General Support
