[comp.sys.m88k] ghostscript 2.2 on aviion

cchwitz@kocb.astem.or.jp (06/13/91)

Has anyone successfully made the latest version of ghostscript on DG aviion?
I could "make" it all right, and the first page appears correctly, but
from the second page, the screen turns into black and further nothing
is shown.
As it works correctly using Sun or MIPS Magnum's display, I think it
has something to do with the DG's X-Server(I use the one with 4.32).

Thanks for any information.

Re: building gs on the AViiON ...

For 4.31 it was simple: remove the '-X' from LDFLAGS in unix-gcc.mak
and define USG on the make command line (or in the unix-gcc.mak file).

Not sure about 4.32 (w/ the new X server), but the above should be
easy to try out...

I haven't ever run ghostscript, but I did just upgrade to 4.32 and the
release notes talk about an option to run the server in "backwards
compatibility" mode (but they don't really describe what the differences
are).

I have been running my server in backward compatible mode, and so far I
have not had any problems running older 4.31 X applications as well as
new applications linked with the new 4.32 libraries.

You might want to check how your server is started and try it either
with or without the backward flag.

I also would be interested in any news about ghostscript on the
88k.

Thanks to all who responded. It turned out that, when turning off the
backing pixmap facility, all the pages come out normally.

The problem was, when trying to preview those files created by dvips or
something similar, the screen becomes initialized to black (not white)
each time GhostScript prompts for showpage, and so nothing appears in the
screen unless things were intended to be drawn in white.

Any idea for this?
I'm using DG/UX 4.32 with some Japanese extensions (called JLS 1.32).
