First Announcement and Call for Papers COMPUTER SCIENCE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION 5th Symposium September 19-21, 1990, Vienna, Austria Gesellschaft fuer Informatik - GI Magistrat der Stadt Wien, MA 22 - Umweltschutz Oesterreichische Computer-Gesellschaft - OCG Oesterreichisches Bundesinstitut fuer Gesundheitswesen SCOPE The goal of the symposium "Computer Science for Environmental Protection" is to examine the state of the art of computer applications used for environmental protection purposes. In this way, the productive application of computers is promoted and the communication between computer scientists and experts in environmental protection is intensified. CONTENTS The conference will cover a wide range of issues concerning the use of computer applications for environmentally oriented purposes. These topics include: - applications in the field of climatology or prevention of air pollution - measuring networks, measuring stations, dispersion models - measuring and prognosis of water quality - research on ecosystems, forests, animals, nature conservation - refuse disposal, inherited waste problems - analysis of noise pollution, noise control - effects of the use of energy - state and local environmental information systems - traffic or tasks in logistics - environmental legislation, environmental impact assessment - system research for environmental protection - ecological and economical interaction - environmental education In the field of computer science, the following topics are expected to be discussed: - model design and simulation - use of data bases and information systems - on-line data bases - geographic information systems - process and data acquisition and process control - visualisation, image processing - computer graphics - expert systems - use of high performance computers. In addition to invited speakers, presentations and tutorials, a survey of the existing computer applications for environmental protection will be conducted. A panel discussion along with a presentation of applications currently in use should faciliate the exchange of information among participants. INFORMATION ON SUBMISSION OF PAPERS If you would like to give a lecture, hand in an abstract of at least one page using format DIN A4. A more detailed version (including bibliographical data) would be appreciated. Based on the abstracts received, the program committee will decide by May 1, 1990, on those who will present their topics. The final version of the papers may not exceed 12 pages (DIN A4) and must reach the organizer by July 26, 1990 at the latest. Papers will be printed in the "Springer" publishing house's series "Computer Science Technical Reports" and participants will receive copies at the beginning of the conference. The lectures, which should last 30 minutes (including discussions), will be held in three parallel sessions. Conference languages are German and English.
