Subject: Meeting with the Ambassador at U. of R. ============================================================================= Dear Sir/Madam: The Chinese ambassador,Mr. Zhang Wenpu, in Canada met students and scholars at University of Regina. He was flooded with questions but he answered nearly nothing, as we expected. As there are much questions than answers, that makes it quite difficult to make a Q&A pattern report for you. As most of the questions are very familiar to us, I am going to ignore some of the questions to organize a report according to answers. Q: Why did you come here mysteriously? Mr. Tang Qian came here mysteriously too. ( Tang, the secondary secretary, may be promoted 'primary' secretary now.) Why? Why didn't you inform us? A: ( He actually did not answer the question) There are rumors that I have been sending Special Agent to collect black materials. There is no such thing at all. There are even rumors that I installed some computer-controlled equipments to photograph the demonstrating students is Ottwa. My heaven, where can I get such advanced equipments. Q: In Chinese history, all of the students movements are patriotic. Like the movements led by CCP before liberation againest KMT, KMT said those movements were counter revolutionary. But now, CCP is is saying the 6.4 movement is counterrevolutionary too. ( I believe that guy did not finish, than the ambassador interrupt him very angrily.) A: Don't put CCP and KMT together! You have to bear in mind that China has made great advance since 1949. Although we CCP did make some mistakes, like culture revolution, but put all of them together, CCP did make great contribution to the advancement of China. You should not join the so called FEDERATION OF CHINESE STUDENTS AND SCHOLARS IN CANADA (FCSSC). FCSSC is a counter revolutionary organization because it is againest CCP. I did not want to meet you in such a special situation ( which means, I guess, you , the members of the organization, are counter revolutionary too. ) but some of the students want to meet me. I want to say a few words about 6.4. I believe there is no government can tolerate for 50 days to see that such a holy place like TAM square be occupied. We have to believe that there were lots of thugs beating and killing soldiers. Q: Why there was no violence before PLA entered the city, but there was after. (audience laugh and no answer.) Q: You mentioned that there were soldiers killed by 'thugs', but why didn't you mention the killed hundreds of students? A: You should not believe the misleading western media. like 'Two armies are fighting, civil war is going on in china.' These rumors were from CIA. Q: Yes, some one is concocting rumors. (Laugh from audience.) A: I guess it is too late. I have to go now. I wish great success. Q: Let us thank the ambassador with claps. ( A few claps with some flavor of contempt.) ============================================================================= 2. China sweep up "yellow books", great victory? . ============================================================================= Was China's Anti-Porn Drive a Big Success or Giant Flop? By KATHY WILHELM Associated Press -- supplied via ND special correspondent from The Gazette, Montreal, ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- BEIJING - Headlines in official newspapers Tuesday proclaimed impressive results: after two months a campaign to "sweep up pornography" has netted 30 million books and magazines. But on inside pages, several newspapers reported that the campaign backfired, in some cases increasing sales of pornographic books and spreading them among children. It seems that in many cities each work unit was given a quota for turning in pornographic material. Bosses gave their workers orders: bring in one dirty book each. Even elementary schools were given quotas, and they sent their students home to rummage through shelves and cupboards for "yellow literature," the Chinese phrase for pornography. Such orders are not unusual: Chinese children are accustomed to bringing in dead rats during anti-rat campaigns. But this assignment caused confusion. <Economic Reference News> said some students took the order literally and came back with books printed on yellow paper. Others grabbed calendars with pictures of female movie stars, or any magazine that had a woman's picture on the cover. Some parents complained that they didn't have any pornography, but teachers told them to bring in something - anything - for the count, the paper said. The newspaper described the assignment as "preposterous". A reader who wrote to <China Youth News> agreed. Students at the middle school in her hometown in eastern China's Jiangxi province were ordered to bring in two yellow books apiece. "Parents didn't know whether to laugh or cry," wrote Long Ximiao. "Some parents asked their children to go to the street and buy pornographic books at high prices. There were so many people buying pornographic books that the supply fell short of demand. Prices went up several times each day." Other problems developed in Dengzhou City in central China's Henan province, a reader reported in a letter to the <Peasants Daily>. He said so many people were drafted into "sweeping up pornography" teams that their "quality was not too high," and team members were holding the confiscated books for their own use. Some even resold them, the reader said, creating new outlets for yellow literature. Speeches have given the impression that most pornography comes from outside. Li Ruihuan, the party leader in charge of literature and the arts, said in a speech published during the weekend that "foreign forces" were trying to spread pornography, gambling and drugs inside China. Printing or selling pornographic material is punishable with a three-year prison term, but the law does not define pornography. ========================================================================== 3. Subject: World Cup soccer result - Asian group (China is one of the team) ========================================================================== Played Wednesday, October 17, 1989 in Singapore. For the sake of keeping track on other World Cup Qualifying groups, here is a score in the Asian group: United Arab Emirates 2 China 1 China opened the scoring at the 69' minute, but UAE scored at the 87' to tie the game, and at the 89' to take the lead. This three team group sees UAE in the lead with 3 pts in two games, South Korea in second place also with 3pts with a goal less in goal average than UAE, and China in last place with 2pts. The top two teams qualify. ******************************************************************** END ***
