Countdown for mission 51-A began with the call to stations at 2:00 a.m. EST this morning, November 5. Launch is planned for 8:18 a.m. EST November 7 when, I am sure, the TV networks will be too busy concentrating on the U.S. presidential election aftermath to cover the shuttle liftoff for more than 5 minutes. -- Roger Noe ihnp4!ihlts!rjnoe

The countdown towards Wednesday's launch began at 0400 EST today, and NASA said it was considering informing reporters when the count reached T-9 minutes. A decision is expected today. Because of built in holds in the countdown, even with the beginning known, it is still impossible to determine the precise launch time, which will be between 1315 and 1715 EST Wednesday.
