[net.columbia] Countdown Started

rjnoe@ihlts.UUCP (Roger Noe) (11/05/84)

Countdown for mission 51-A began with the call to stations at 2:00 a.m. EST
this morning, November 5. Launch is planned for 8:18 a.m. EST November 7 when,
I am sure, the TV networks will be too busy concentrating on the U.S.
presidential election aftermath to cover the shuttle liftoff for more than
5 minutes.

During previous STS flights, NASA and ATT cooperated and set up some
kind of telephone link that allowed mere mortals to listen in on
live communications during certain times. Is this phone link operating
for mission 51-A and if so, what is the number??

The countdown towards Wednesday's launch began at 0400 EST today,
and NASA said it was considering informing reporters when the
count reached T-9 minutes. A decision is expected today. Because
of built in holds in the countdown, even with the beginning known,
it is still impossible to determine the precise launch time, which
will be between 1315 and 1715 EST Wednesday.

The countdown for launch started yesterday with the tradition
call to stations and the powering up of Discovery's electrical
systems. Launch is scheduled for 0733 EDT tomorrow (Monday, the
17th). All three networks and CNN plan live coverage if the
launch is on time. CBS and CNN plan coverage even if there is
a delay.
