[comp.os.os2] What we are doing with OS/2

ken@pyr.gatech.EDU (Ken Hall) (10/19/89)

We just started using os/2 about a month ago and are running sidekick, ms-word,
lan manager, ms c compiler, courier e-mail & oracle on it--so far. We have
ordered os/2 upgrades for excel and pagemaker, and look forward to all the
other applications which are sure to follow.

We really like it. Of course there's a lot to be said against it at this
stage, but once we got some applications for it it became a really nice
operating system to work with. Lan manager is very nice. I can bring it
up in workstation/server mode, connect to any other server on campus, or
connect to it from another work station. Plus I can connect to any other
printer or communication's port on the network. [FYI, we are using
Ungermann-Bass hardware on an ethernet network]

For those out there who have TRIED to run Oracle on a DOS platform, os/2
is where Oracle belongs (at least on a PC based machine). The os/2
implimentation of Oracle is very nice. It has a long way to go; for instance,
sql-net for lan manager/os/2 has not yet been released. And we are just
crossing our fingers that it supports u-b's niu card. But eventually they
will.

There are more good things I have to say about os/2, except my fingers are
getting tired.

I will say, however, that we plan to use it extensively within the domain
over which our group watches--Business & Finance--when more applications
become available.
