The correction article recently posted was correct enough for govt. work :-) "VIP passes are offered, not requested." Requests for VIP passes can be made if you have a decent postion working on/with the shuttle -- my father got VIP passes for several launches when he was head of safety for United Space Boosters, Inc. Vandenburg operations; he got them by asking for them. These passes allow you to get to the closest area for civilians which is, as was noted in the correction, approximately 3 miles away. The passes that the general public can request are approximately 5 miles away, as noted in the correction article. You can also write to your Senator and request them. This is the most common way of doing it if you don't have other connections.
